Psychosocial Recovery Coach – NDIS Update July 2020

From July 1st 2020, the NDIS have introduced a new item to their funded support list, known as a Psychosocial Recovery Coach, which will become available for NDIS participants.

The introduction of this service has come into effect by the NDIS after feedback that the current support items available to participants are predominantly focused on support, instead of recovery.

Engaging with a Psychosocial Recovery Coach  works to support participants with psychosocial disabilities to live a full and contributing life, allowing individuals to take more control of their lives and improve management of the complex challenges presented in their daily lives.

The roles and responsibilities of Recovery Coaches include but are not limited to:

  • Developing a recovery-enabling relationship
  • Supporting participants’ engagement with the NDIS
  • Coaching to increase recovery skills and personal capacity, including motivation, strengths, resilience and decision-making
  • Supporting participants with their recovery planning
  • Collaborating with the broader system of supports

Recovery Coaches will bring competencies set out by the Australian Health Ministers’ Advisory Council’s National framework for recovery-oriented mental health services to their patients.

With over 35 years of experience in supporting clients with mental health, St Jude’s are thrilled this item has been created, in response to a recovery based approach. Our team looks forward to continuing to assist both our existing clients and new participants, in order to build their capacity and work collaboratively with families and supports to implement their recovery plans.

If you are interested in learning more about how a Recovery Coach can positively assist the lives of individuals experiencing a psychosocial disability, it would be our pleasure to discuss your circumstances either over the phone or in the comfort of your own home. We support approved NDIS participants and can also support those who may not yet have an approved plan already, by guiding individuals through the application process.
