What made you decide to become a Registered Nurse?

The very first reason I considered the nursing profession is due to my parents.  Both of my parents have devoted their whole careers to health services, with my father being a chief Pharmacist and my mother being a Nurse. Growing up as a teenager, I was always very fascinated to see the amount of satisfaction my parents had doing their respective jobs. Another reason was due to my for passion for Biology and desire to work with people. This made Nursing a perfect fit as a profession, where I can learn about human biology and at the same time utilise my knowledge towards helping people.

Tell us a bit about commencing work as a Registered Nurse.
I started my nursing career as a staff nurse in a multidisciplinary hospital in India. I worked with people of different age groups, cultures, religions – people from all walks of life. I’ve worked as a general medical surgical nurse and emergency nurse. So far in my experience, I have worked with patients with various physical and mental health conditions. I have also worked as a Clinical Facilitator in India where I used to teach nursing students about Geriatric and Community Nursing. Before working at St Jude’s Health Care Services, I have also worked in both In-home Aged Care and Disability Care facilities. I’m really looking forward to use my experience to support those in my care while working as a part of St Jude’s health Care Services.

What do you enjoy about working as a Registered Nurse?
According to me, the biggest highlight about nursing profession is it’s dynamic nature. Every single experience is unique, every single learning is different. This profession not only provides an ongoing platform for learning but also improves the individuals both personally and professionally. Whilst by no means it’s an easy career to undertake, it is absolutely a rewarding one. It comes with high job security and the skills learnt are transferable life skills as being an individual you would use them every single day. I believe there is no career more inspiring than nursing. You are privy to amazing miracles and feats of human nature, which will live with you forever . You get to support and witness people who have been hurt in the most traumatic way rise up and defeat the odds. These every day people will bless you with an abundance of heart warming moments which last your lifetime.

What do you enjoy about working with St Jude’s?

There are so many wonderful things about working with St Jude’s. The best part is the flexibility I have with my hours. I work full-time both in and out of the office and my managers trust me to produce high quality work and results. I work hard to maintain that level of trust, which keeps me engaged and excited but at the same time enables me to enjoy my other passions in life. I also love the company culture and enjoy working with everyone. So far working with St Jude’s, I have felt that each and every individual is taken care of. I love that I have a great degree of control and freedom within my job.

What does a typical day in the life at St Jude’s look like for you?
My typical day at work starts with client visits, where I go to see my clients for their specific nursing needs. During my visit to each client, I make sure I provide best nursing care to my client, while taking some time to speak with my client to address any ongoing issues they have. I make sure I continuously take into consideration my clients needs and plan accordingly so that any changes to their condition is addressed early and accordingly. Following the client visits, I document everything and then I speak to my team if any changes need to be made in the care of the individual.

Can you share an achievement you’ve experienced in your Nursing career?
The biggest achievement in my nursing career date’s back to year 2012 where I received Award of Appreciation for my Nursing Services on the Eve of Nurse’s Day when I was working in SGRD Hospital Amritsar. This is very special to me because the hospital where I worked staffs more than 300 nurses, out of which I was given that award! Ever since after that award, I always made sure that I continue to provide best services to my patients so that I never let anyone down.

Tell us a little about your life outside of work.
I am a mother of two little boys and I just love spending time with them. Both my boys love to explore things and I enjoy watching them as they see new things, ask questions and love listening to me when I answer those questions. Other than that, I love to cook food and more often experiment in the kitchen. I love the fact that people actually appreciate my cooking.
