Aged Care Services Australia

Residential Aged Care Homes in Australia

St Jude’s provides residential aged care services across Western Australia and Queensland. Whether you’re exploring options for yourself or researching on behalf of a parent, our aged care homes are warm, safe environments where you or your loved one can feel at home while receiving round-the-clock support from people who genuinely care.

With over 40 years of experience in health care and disability services, we understand that choosing an aged care home is one of the biggest decisions a family can make. We’re here to make that process feel less overwhelming and more human.

What is residential aged care?

Residential aged care, sometimes called a nursing home or aged care home, is a place where older Australians live and receive ongoing personal care, clinical support, and daily assistance when it’s no longer safe or practical to manage at home. Unlike assisted living facilities or Support at Home, residential aged care in Australia provides 24-hour supervised support for older people with higher or more complex needs.

Under the Aged Care Act 2024, which commenced on 1 November 2025, aged care in Australia is now governed by a rights-based framework. Every person in government-funded aged care has a legally enforceable Statement of Rights. That includes the right to safe, quality care that respects your dignity, your choices, and the things that matter to you.

At St Jude’s, we don’t just meet those standards. They reflect the kind of care we’ve always believed in. Our aged care homes in Perth and Brisbane are built around comfort, connection, and choice. Whether your loved one needs help with day-to-day personal care, specialised dementia support, or simply a safe place where they can enjoy the company of others, you’ll find a team that treats every resident like family.

If you’re researching aged care services for yourself or for someone you love, you don’t have to figure it all out on your own. Our team is happy to walk you through what’s involved, answer your questions, and help you decide whether residential care is the right fit.

Call us in WA on (08) 9279 4343, or in QLD on (07) 2800 6050.

Our Aged Care Services

Every person’s care needs are different, and they often change over time. Our residential aged care homes offer a range of aged care services designed to support your loved one through every stage, from settling in and building new routines to managing complex health conditions with clinical expertise. Here’s what aged care in Australia looks like at St Jude’s.

24-Hour Nursing and Personal Care

Registered nurses are on site around the clock, supported by trained care staff who assist with daily tasks like bathing, dressing, meals, medication, and mobility. Care plans are tailored to each resident and reviewed regularly as needs change.

Dementia Care

Our team is trained in evidence-based dementia care, creating calm and structured environments that reduce confusion and promote feelings of safety. We work closely with families to understand each person's history, preferences, and communication needs, because good dementia care starts with knowing who someone is, not just what they need.

Respite Care

Short-term stays for older people who need temporary support, or for families and carers who need a break. Respite gives your loved one the chance to experience aged care services without a long-term commitment, and gives you time to recharge.

Palliative and End-of-Life Care

When a resident's health enters a palliative phase, our focus shifts to comfort, dignity, and quality of life. We support both residents and their families with sensitivity, clinical expertise, and as much time and space as they need. Families are kept informed and involved in care decisions at every stage, so you always know what's happening and have a voice in how care is provided.

Allied Health and Therapy Services

Many of our residents benefit from allied health services delivered right within the home, including physiotherapy, occupational therapy, and speech pathology. These therapies support mobility, communication, and the ability to live independently for as long as possible.

Social and Lifestyle Programs

Residential care should feel like living, not just being cared for. Our aged care homes run recreational and social activities including: community outings, music programs, gardening, art sessions, and social events, all designed to keep residents connected, engaged, and enjoying life.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if it's time for residential aged care?

There’s no single sign. It’s usually a gradual shift. You might notice increasing difficulty managing daily activities like cooking, bathing, or medication. Falls may be becoming more frequent. Perhaps the person you care for is feeling isolated, or you’re finding it harder to provide the level of support they need at home. If the care required is more than what can be safely managed with in-home support, residential care may offer a safer, more supportive environment. Our team can help you think through that decision. Call us anytime for an honest conversation.

How do I apply for residential aged care?

The first step is to contact My Aged Care on 1800 200 422 or apply online. You’ll go through a screening process, followed by a needs assessment conducted through the Single Assessment System (SAS) — a single assessment pathway that replaced the former Aged Care Assessment Teams in December 2024. If you’re assessed as eligible for residential care, you can then choose a provider. You’re also welcome to contact us at any stage. We can guide you through how the process works and what to expect.

How much does residential aged care cost?

Costs depend on your individual financial circumstances. Everyone pays a basic daily fee, which is set by the Australian Government and indexed twice a year (in March and September). Beyond that, you may be asked to contribute toward accommodation and care costs based on a means assessment conducted by Services Australia. The Australian Government subsidises the majority of care costs, and lifetime caps apply to protect residents from paying indefinitely. You can use the My Aged Care fee estimator to get a clearer picture of what you might pay, and we’d always recommend seeking independent financial advice before making a decision.

Can I visit an aged care home before deciding?

Absolutely, and we encourage it. Visiting in person is one of the best ways to get a feel for the environment, meet the team, and ask questions. You can arrange a tour of our Perth or Brisbane home by getting in touch with our team. You can also compare aged care homes across Australia using the Star Ratings published on the My Aged Care website.

What's the difference between residential aged care and Support at Home?

Support at Home provides funded support services while you continue living in your own home. That includes things like personal care, meal preparation, transport, and allied health. Residential aged care in Australia is for people who need a higher level of support than can be safely provided at home, including 24-hour nursing care and supervised living. Some families start with Support at Home and transition to residential care as needs increase, and that’s a completely normal path.

What rights do residents have in aged care?

Under the Aged Care Act 2024, every person receiving government-funded aged care services is protected by a Statement of Rights. These include the right to safe and quality care, respect for your dignity and privacy, involvement in decisions about your care, and the ability to raise concerns without fear of reprisal. The Aged Care Quality and Safety Commission oversees these standards and handles complaints. You can contact them on 1800 951 822 if you ever have concerns about an aged care home.
