Tim’s Story
How one interstate move led to a new sense of home, happiness, and belonging
Tim is 51 and originally from New South Wales. For years, he lived in a shared accommodation facility there, close to where all his family still live. But earlier this year, he made a big decision: to move interstate to Brisbane for a fresh start.
It wasn’t a decision he made lightly. Moving away from family and everything familiar takes courage. But Tim was ready for something different, and in February 2025, he made the move to supported independent living in Brisbane with St Jude’s.
Since then, he hasn’t looked back.

A smooth transition, even from interstate
Moving interstate can be daunting for anyone. For Tim, it meant flying into a new city, starting fresh with a new provider, and building a life in an unfamiliar place.
But the team at St Jude’s made sure he wasn’t doing it alone.
Staff met Tim at the airport when he arrived. From there, they helped him settle into his new home, connected him with community activities, and even helped him find a local doctor. It was the kind of practical, thoughtful support that made a stressful transition feel manageable.
For families and participants considering NDIS accommodation in Brisbane, especially those moving from interstate, that kind of care during the early days can make all the difference.
Finding happiness in a new place
When asked how his life has changed since moving in, Tim’s answer is simple: “I am more kind to my housemates. I am happy.”
It’s a straightforward response, but it says a lot. Feeling settled enough to be present for others, and content enough to recognise your own happiness, that’s not a small thing.
Tim has found joy in his new surroundings, too. He loves Brisbane’s architecture, the buildings and structures around the city have caught his attention, and he’s been sketching what he sees. Art has always been part of who he is, and having the space and support to continue that in his new home has mattered.
Connection and community
One of the highlights for Tim has been the friendships he’s built since moving in.
He’s made friends at his art program, which he attends regularly. And back at home, he’s developed good relationships with his housemates too. That sense of connection, both inside and outside the house, has helped Brisbane start to feel like home.
The staff have played a role in that. They help Tim with cooking and personal care, making sure he’s supported with the practical things while also encouraging him to engage with the world around him.
Learning patience
When asked what skills he’s gained since moving in, Tim reflected on something that isn’t always easy to talk about: patience.
“I am learning to be patient when things don’t go my way,” he says.
It’s a quiet kind of growth, the sort that doesn’t always show up in a checklist of achievements but matters deeply in day-to-day life. Learning to manage frustration, to sit with discomfort, and to keep going when things feel hard, that’s real progress.

What Tim is proud of
Tim has a few things he’s proud of since the move.
He’s happy in Brisbane. He loves the buildings and the city. He made a brave decision to move interstate on his own, and he followed through. And now, he’s part of a community, at home and through his art program, where he feels like he belongs.
At St Jude’s, our Supported Independent Living services are built around people like Tim. Whether someone is moving from across the city or across the country, we work to make the transition as smooth as possible and to create an environment where people can genuinely thrive.
Frequently asked questions
What is supported independent living (SIL)?
Supported independent living is a type of NDIS-funded support that helps people with disability live as independently as possible. It typically involves living in a shared home with other participants, with trained staff providing 24/7 support for things like personal care, cooking, household tasks, and community access. The goal is to build skills and independence while having the support you need close by.
Can I access SIL in Brisbane if I’m moving from interstate?
Yes. Your NDIS plan is portable, which means you can use your funding anywhere in Australia. If you’re planning to move to Brisbane from another state, a provider like St Jude’s can help coordinate the transition, including meeting you on arrival, helping you settle in, and connecting you with local services and supports.
What does SIL funding cover?
SIL funding covers the cost of the support services you receive, things like help with personal care, cooking, cleaning, medication management, and community participation. It does not cover rent, groceries, or other day-to-day living expenses. Those costs are usually paid from your Disability Support Pension or other income.
How do I know if SIL is right for me or my family member?
SIL is generally suited to people who need a higher level of support, often 24/7, to live safely and independently. If you’re unsure, your Support Coordinator can help assess your needs and explore whether SIL, or another option like Individualised Living Options (ILO), might be a better fit.
What’s the difference between SIL and SDA?
SIL refers to the support services you receive (the people who help you). SDA (Specialist Disability Accommodation) refers to the housing itself, purpose-built or modified homes designed for people with very high support needs. Some people have both SIL and SDA funding, but they’re separate parts of an NDIS plan.
